Fort Seward Sculpture Garden
A few years ago, a small group of artists in Haines, Alaska saw a way to create a vibrant public space in the foundation ruins of an old barracks building which burned down in 1981. They envisioned the crumbling ashlar walls and rubble being transformed into a unique and vibrant outdoor sculpture garden and public space.
Backed by community support, and over 1,000 volunteer hours later, the sculpture garden site has been cleaned up and currently houses 10 art installations by local artists. However, the revitalization work is ongoing: there are still a number of safety, accessibility, and aesthetic concerns that now need to be addressed.
